NLC or Nocturnal leg cramps are pains which happen in your legs during night and they usually wake you up. NLC is most frequent during night, they can occur during inactivity periods.

The most targeted muscles by NLC are the calf areas, but it can spread on the thighs and feet. It can be really painful and the symptoms can last to a few minutes.  NLC affects both sexes equally.

What can make your legs have cramps at night?

  • Long periods of sitting
  • Slouching instead of just sitting
  • Poor posture
  • Over-exertion of your muscles
  • Working or standing on concrete floors for a long time

Pregnancy can also increase the risk of NLC

Some medical conditions that are connected to NLC are:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Structural conditions (peripheral artery disease, flat feet)
  • Neuropathy, myopathy, motor neuron disease and other neuromuscular disorders
  • Metabolic problems
  • Kidney failure
  • Endocrine disorders such as hypothyroidism and diabetes
  • Electrolyte disparities
  • Dehydration
  • Alcoholism

Relieve your leg cramps:

  • Take a brief warm bath or shower
  • Lift up the leg that is affected and flex your foot upward to your head
  • Massage the muscles with an ice pack or the hands
  • Walk, stand up and jiggle the leg that is affected
